The Home Matters Story:

We need a place to cook dinner every night and brush our teeth every morning. A place for activity, board games, and laughter. A place to relax and call our own. But sometimes, a home’s daily effect on the neighborhood, environment, and health of loved ones is overlooked. Foreclosure displaces families and brings blight to otherwise happy neighborhoods. Inefficient energy use costs families money and contributes to global warming. Poor indoor air quality harms health. The Home Matters project seeks to provide education and identify affordable solutions for these issues.

Three Rivers Community Action, the developer, is purchasing five foreclosures in downtown Northfield. These homes are typically older and have health and safety issues such as mold, pests and lead-based paint. They are not economical to operate due to outdated systems, poor insulation and inefficient appliances. By rehabilitating them, everyone benefits. Surrounding home values increase. Families are presented with truely affordable homeownership opportunities. And hopefully, the community learns about best practices to adopt in thier own homes.  Home Matters is made possible by many generous partners.
